The Ministry of Internal Affairs held a meeting with the special representative of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly on gender issues
Today, July 12, Deputy Minister of the Interior Tatyana Kovalchuk met with former Canadian Minister for Multiculturalism and the Status of Women, the current Special Representative of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on Gender Issues Heidi Fry.
“An indicator of a mature democratic society is zero tolerance for gender-based violence. The Ministry of Internal Affairs is the main body in the system of central executive bodies on the formation and implementation of state policy in the sphere of protection of the rights and freedoms of citizens. That is why the introduction of a gender-neutral approach is important for the professional development of the country's law enforcement agencies,” the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs said.
Tatiana Kovalchuk added that one of the directions of building an equal opportunities policy is the empowerment of women in peacekeeping missions.
“We have approved the Ministry's Action Plan for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace, Security”, which covers the entire system of the Ministry of the Interior and is significantly broader in content than the National Action Plan. It establishes a woman as an active participant in resolving conflict and ensuring peace,” she said.
“Men associate the concept of gender equality exclusively with women and, mistakenly, with radical feminism. The state must show that gender equality is about the impact of masculinity on men and femininity on women. Only by finding a balance between these concepts is effective social policy possible,” said Heidi Fry.
She also stressed that the OSCE is ready to cooperate with the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the development of democratic institutions and the protection of human rights.
