Today, September 14, under the chairmanship of Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Tetiana Kovalchuk, a training on gender equality was held for the top leaders of the internal affairs system. The event was supported by the EU Advisory Mission and the Swedish Folke Bernadotte Academy.

“The objective of the training is to build the gender-oriented capacity of leaders and managers. We understand that it is necessary to change the understanding of the gender aspect from above. It is necessary for all top management to understand the importance of gender issues, tasks and expected results,” Tatiana Kovalchuk stressed.

Within the framework of the training, they presented the Presentation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs measures on the implementation of the National Action Plan for the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace, Security”.

“The plan covers the entire system of the Ministry of the Interior and, in its content, is much broader than the National Action Plan. It enshrines women as an active participant in resolving conflict and ensuring peace,” added the deputy interior minister.

She also said that there is currently a network of gender advisers and contact persons working in the internal affairs bodies. Their aim is to contribute to ensuring the principle of equal opportunities through the integration of the gender perspective into the activities of the departments.

“Men associate the concept of gender equality exclusively with women and, mistakenly, with radical feminism. The state must show that gender equality is about the impact of masculinity on men and femininity on women, the impact of social stereotypes on them. Only when a balance is found between these concepts is effective public policy and social progress possible,” said the deputy head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Adviser to the EU's Gender Advisory Mission Agata Zhymanska said that adherence to gender parity policy is important for effective governance.

“A true leader of his team must take into account the needs of both women and men. At the same time, it should not be driven by social clichés and stereotypes,” she added.

Olga Perunova, Head of the Department for Gender Equality of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, said that 30 heads of structural units of the bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs took part in the training.

They listened to seminars on the following topics: “Gender equality as a tool for improving security”, “Best practices for implementing gender equality in security sector institutions”, “How to be a gender-sensitive leader?” et cetera.
