Tatiana Kovalchuk: A gender adviser should work in each body of the Ministry of Internal Affairs
The Deputy Minister said this today, April 5, during the communication seminar of the State Emergency Service.
Tatiana Kovalchuk said that in each executive body there should be gender advisers who would help implement gender equal opportunities policies.
“We find people who are willing to work as gender counselors. They understand perfectly well that gender policy is not the promotion of women's rights — it is equal opportunities for everyone and for everyone,” the Deputy Minister stressed.
At the same time, Tatiana Kovalchuk said that a single center will be created in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which will be engaged in monitoring the gender situation in all CEVs.
She noted that the role of women in our society is changing.
“In Ukraine, the role of women in society is changing. Especially we began to observe this with the beginning of the conflict in the east of our country. And when we talk about the gender aspect, we can safely compare it with respect for human rights. And today we clearly realize that in order to establish a gender approach, we must change the legislation and our mentality,” said Tatiana Kovalchuk.
The Deputy Minister recalled that in 2011 Ukraine joined the Istanbul Convention, but it was not finally possible to ratify it precisely because of differences in the legislation.
“In 2011, Ukraine joined the Istanbul Convention. Which stresses that it is the duty of every democratic European state to completely eradicate violence in all its forms, including gender-based violence, as well as to create a system to prevent violence against women and to properly punish perpetrators. And we are working to ratify this document 100%,” she said.
