This was announced today, July 11, by Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Tatyana Kovalchuk during a meeting with the UN Women delegation.

“The gender aspect in the activities of law enforcement agencies is quite new for Ukraine. We understand that it is fundamental to the development of the internal affairs system. That is why so much attention is drawn to him. Even in the most important working document of the Ministry of Internal Affairs - Strategy for the development of the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine until 2020, the goals and objectives of gender policy are included in the first place,” the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs informed.

She added that UN Women acts as a constant partner of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the development of a gender-neutral approach in the work of law enforcement.

“Recently, we jointly developed a special training course for cadets of the National Academy of Internal Affairs, which will be introduced into the program of future police officers in the near future,” said Tatiana Kovalchuk.

The participants of the meeting discussed the directions of bilateral cooperation between the departments. In particular, the possibility of launching trainings on countering gender-based violence for police officers in the eastern regions of Ukraine.

The UN Women delegation presented the projects “Building a democratic, peaceful and gender-equal society in Ukraine”, funded by the Government of Norway, and “Gender equality in decentralisation reforms and law enforcement activities”, which is implemented with the financial support of the Government of Denmark. They talked about their goals and objectives.

“The problem of gender-based violence is global, it is not a purely Ukrainian problem. Our task is to accumulate the best international practices to counter this phenomenon and direct them to its minimization and, in the future, its complete elimination,” said Dominika Stoyanoska, International Program Manager for UN Women.

She also noted that the Ministry of Internal Affairs is one of the first state bodies in Ukraine, which includes a structural unit that monitors the observance of gender equality policy in its system.

At the end, the parties agreed on a further cooperation plan.
