Gender equality is one of the key factors in the development of state policy of the bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs

This was stated by Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Kovalchuk Tatyana during a meeting with representatives of the UN Mission.

 

The parties met to discuss Ukraine's achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The National Report “Sustainable Development Goals: Ukraine”, prepared by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, provides guidelines for Ukraine's achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were approved at the UN Summit on Sustainable Development in 2015. Taking into account the principle of “leave no one aside”, Ukraine has developed a national SDGs system (86 national development tasks and 172 indicators for their monitoring), which will provide a basis for further development planning of Ukraine and monitoring the state of achievement of the SDGs.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Director of the Department of Organizational and Hardware Work of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Irina Gubenko and representatives of the UN Mission — gender expert Osa Nilen, expert on IDPs Greta Zender, UN expert on statistics and monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals Laurie Bell, expert UNICEF Natalia Sytnikova, as well as the representative of the UN Women in Ukraine Galina Meshcheryakova.

One of the objectives of the National Report is “Gender Equality”, which is one of the priority areas of the reform of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and one of the key factors in the development of public policy for all bodies, which are directed by the Minister of Internal Affairs. During the meeting, issues of reducing the level of gender-based and domestic violence, ensuring effective prevention of its manifestations and timely assistance to victims, ensuring equal opportunities for representation at higher levels of decision-making in political and social life, etc.

“For the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the interest, assistance and support of international partners, namely the UN Mission in the implementation of the policy of equal rights and opportunities for women and men in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which becomes an integral part of the activities of all authorities in Ukraine,” the Deputy Minister stressed.

UN Women representatives were presented with the Strategy for the Development of the System of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine until 2020, where the goals and objectives of gender policy are included in the first place. The next steps for the phased implementation and implementation of the Action Plan of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the implementation of the National Action Plan for the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace, Security” for the period up to 2020 were also discussed.

Representatives of the UN Mission noted that the Ministry of Internal Affairs is actively involved in the process of reforming the system in the direction of gender equality, and assured of further support of the department.

“UN Women is ready to provide assistance, support, necessary expertise and guidance during the implementation and implementation by the Ministry of the Interior of the Action Plan for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace, Security” for the period up to 2020,” said gender expert Osa Nielsen.

In turn, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Tetiana Kovalchuk noted that thanks to the active cooperation and assistance of international partners, the Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to implement generally defined principles of gender policy and elimination of gender discrimination in the structure of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and in Ukrainian society as a whole.
