With SafeBorder, border guards checked 1 million COVID certificates and found 675 fake
The State Border Service of Ukraine effectively applies SafeBorder software to detect fake COVID certificates. Electronic verification of COVID-19 certificates confirming vaccination of citizens, negative test result or recovery from illness, border guards began to apply from August 2021.
Since the beginning of the application of this software, border guards have already checked more than 1 million digital COVID certificates during registration of citizens to enter Ukraine. Most of all, citizens use them when crossing the border at checkpoints on the western part of the border and at the capital's airports.
Since the end of September, during the inspection, border guards have detected 675 fake certificates. In all cases, the detection of signs of a criminal offense provided for in Art. 358 Criminal Code “Forgery of documents, seals, stamps and forms, sale or use of forged documents, seals, stamps”, notifications were sent to the National Police.
Last day alone, border guards scanned more than 12.6 thousand QR codes. The lion's share of these certificates were checked at checkpoints on the western border — 5,061 and 5,413 — at the capital's airports. Forged 15 certificates were detected per day.
It should be recalled that SafeBorder software was developed by the EU Trust Network in cooperation with the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.
To check the border guard, it is enough to scan the QR code of the certificate provided by citizens and receive confirmation of the status of the document on the screen of the electronic device. Scanning a QR code takes only a few seconds, which greatly speeds up the passage of control and helps to detect fakes effectively.
It is worth noting that the software is constantly updated depending on the expansion of the list of countries connected to the trusted network of digital COVID certificates or refinements to improve the operation of the system.
