In Sumy region, police discovered a hemp plantation worth almost 3 million hryvnias
On October 2, employees of the Sumy Department of Internal Security of the NPU, together with the investigators of the regional head of police, with the strong support of the soldiers of the special purpose company and with the involvement of dog handlers with service dogs on the territory of Lebedinsky district, discovered a cannabis plantation and detained a group of persons who harvested a drug crop of plants.
For several months, police officers documented the criminal activities of intruders who grew, cultivated, and tended prohibited plants. During the authorized searches of the residence of the suspects, investigators seized about 15 kilograms of ready-to-use marijuana.
The investigators received information that not far from one of the villages of Lebedinsky district unknown persons grow hemp in large numbers. A plantation with drug-containing plants was hidden in thickets in the middle of fields in a hard-to-reach location. The forbidden plants were carefully looked after by intruders.
“Three persons involved in such criminal activity were detained by our employees at the scene of the crime — during the harvest of hemp. During the pre-trial investigation, it was established that a 58-year-old marsupial organized such criminal activity. In addition to him, the group included six more people aged 40 to 52 years,” comments the head of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Sumy region Alexander Anokhin.
More than a thousand cannabis and marijuana plants seized are sent for examination. According to preliminary estimates, the value of the “black” market withdrawn at prices is about 3 million hryvnias.
Police investigators, under the procedural guidance of the prosecutor's office, initiated criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Art. 310 (Sowing or growing hemp) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
In addition, the actions of offenders are seen signs of crimes provided for in Part 3 of Art. 309 (illegal production, manufacture, acquisition, storage, transportation or shipment of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances or their analogues without the purpose of sale) and part 2 of Article 307 (illegal production, manufacture, acquisition, storage, transportation, shipment or sale of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, or their analogues) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for a maximum penalty - up to 10 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. The issue of notifying them of suspicion is currently being resolved.
