Today, April 26, on the Day of the Chernobyl Tragedy, the Ministry of Internal Affairs published documents that highlight the organization of measures to eliminate the consequences of the disaster.

The first to take the blow of extinguishing the fire at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant were the paramilitary fire units of the internal affairs bodies. It was thanks to them that they managed to save the population of the adjacent territories of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia and prevent an even more large-scale catastrophe - a strong hydrogen explosion, which could become the next stage of the accident.

The sectoral state archive (GDA) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs stores documents that cover the organization of measures to eliminate the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. In particular, organizational and administrative documents characterizing the efforts of the Ministry to quickly overcome the consequences of the accident, lists of military personnel of fire brigades, employees of internal affairs bodies and units, medical institutions that participated in the liquidation, evacuation of the population, protection of public order and safety, resolutions and orders on wages, benefits, compensation, etc.

According to these documents, the DGA of the Ministry of Internal Affairs annually fulfills more than a thousand requests from institutions and appeals of citizens, including foreign ones, to confirm the status of a participant in the liquidation of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Work is also continuing to declassify the documents of that time.

In 2017, a decision of the UNESCO Secretariat included in the International Register of the UNESCO Memory of the World Program a set of documents “Documentary heritage related to the accident at the Chernobyl NPP”, which are stored in a number of state archives of Ukraine, in particular — the sectoral state archive of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

The documents of the DGA of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which are presented below, are published for the first time.
