The soldiers of the former special force units "Berkut" who are suspected in committing crimes during the Revolution of Dignity, are suspended from duty until the investigations are completed
This decision was made by the governing body of the National Police of Ukraine on November 20, 2016. It covers the former employees of the police special force units "Bekrut", which are persons of interest in the investigation of crimes committed against participants of civil protests in the Kiev Maidan in December 2013 - February 2014. The issue of their further service in the police will be decided by the Attestation and Police Commissions after the court decision.
The National Police of Ukraine (NPU) attaches special importance to the investigation of crimes committed against participants of the the Revolution of Dignity. Therefore, NPU has sent to the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine (GPU) a letter, requesting to clarify the procedural status of the police officers who are persons of interests in criminal investigations concerning such crimes. Especially the policemen who at the time have served in the special police force units "Berkut".
GPU responded with information on 13 people who had served in the police in 2013-2014. The court chose a measure of restraint in the form of detention or house arrest for six of them. No preventive measure has been applied to the four other former "berkutovtsy".
However, the governing body of NPU has suspended all these 13 people from active duty pending the judicial decision. The issue of their future service in the NPU will be decided by the Certification and Police commissions, taking into account the results of the criminal investigation.
To recall: the former "Berkut" company commander Yevgeny Antonov is not working in the law enforcement bodies for a long time. He was identified as an active participant in the crackdown of the students sit-in on the night of November 30, 2013 and was fired even before the start of the process of certification of police staff.
