Tomorrow the court will choose a preventive measure for two attackers on the photographer of the magazine “Letters” - Artem Shevchenko

Artem Shevchenko, Director of the Communications Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, said this during the action “Security for journalists. Punishment — to the attackers”, which took place today, August 17, in support of photographer of the publication “Letters” Oleksandr Kuzhelnyi.

According to him, the suspects will choose a precautionary measure under Part 2 of Article 345-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which qualifies as a threat or violence against a journalist.

“This is a serious crime. The police will bring the perpetrators to justice, despite their public apologies,” Artem Shevchenko stressed.

It is worth noting that during 2020-2021, NPU investigators initiated 351 criminal proceedings on the fact of obstruction of journalistic activity under the following articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

- 171 (Obstruction of the legitimate professional activity of a journalist) 265 (2020 - 169, 2021 - 96);

- 3451 (Threat or violence against a journalist) 77 (2020 - 45, 2021 - 32);

- 3471 (Intentional destruction or damage to a journalist's property) 9 (2020 - 3, 2021 - 6).

Most cases initiated in: m. Kiev - 54, Lviv and Kiev regions - 29 each, Kharkiv region - 28, Poltava region - 20.

At the moment, the investigation in 220 criminal proceedings has been completed, another 29 have been sent to court.

The state of investigation of criminal proceedings opened on the facts of crimes committed in the sphere of professional activity of journalists is under constant control in the Main Investigative Department of the National Police of Ukraine.
