The National Police sent 10 cases of crimes against journalists to the court

This was stated today, September 15, by Artem Shevchenko, Director of the Communications Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs during a meeting of the Council on Freedom of Speech and Protection of Journalists under the President of Ukraine.

 

“During 2020, the police registered 148 criminal proceedings related to obstruction of the legal professional activity of journalists, of which: 111 — Art. 171 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, 37 — Art. 345-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. According to the results of the investigation, indictments in 10 criminal proceedings were sent to the court,” Artem Shevchenko said.

He added that as of September 11, the police are investigating another 77 criminal proceedings.

“In particular, under Article 171 of the Criminal Code, 55 cases are being investigated, according to Article 345-1 - 22 cases, of which: 45 are investigating units of inquiry, 31 are investigating, in particular: Vinnytsia - 5, Volynska - 1, Dnipropetrovsk - 2, Donetsk - 3, Zakarpattia - 1, Kyiv - 7, Luhansk - 2, 9, m. Kyiv — 19, Mykolaiv — 1, Odessa — 11, Poltava — 1, Rivne — 1, Sumska — 1, Kharkiv — 5, Kherson — 3, Khmelnytska — 1, Chernivtsi — 1, Chernihiv — 2 regions”, - the Director of the Department stressed.

In three of them, the person who committed the crime was established.
“That is, the process is ongoing and the investigating authorities are not stumbling on the spot,” Artem Shevchenko stated.
At the same time, he noted that as of September 15, 158 criminal proceedings of this category, started in previous years, are in the balance.
