Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko called on Ukrainian journalists to support the illegally convicted guard Vitaliy Markiv. He said this during parliamentary hearings on the safety of journalists' activities.

“We ask you to our colleagues in Italy to call for a fair and comprehensive consideration of this case in the appeal and to stop the pressure of the Italian media on the court, so that the decision is objective and our soldier who defended Ukraine does not receive an unfair punishment,” Anton Gerashchenko said.

The Deputy Minister also noted that it was the National Federation of the Italian Press (FNSI) and the Association of Journalists of Lombardy (ALG) that sided with the prosecution and demanded that the Italian Government punish Vitali Markiv.

“Ukrainian soldier Vitaliy Markiv has been in custody in Italy for more than two years. He is baselessly accused of involvement in the murder of Italian journalist Andrea Rocelli. We got acquainted with the sentence of the court, which gave 24 years in prison. In our opinion, there is not a single fact and no evidence for the accusation of Vitaly Markov,” Anton Gerashchenko said.
