Ukraine and Italy intend to extend the Agreement on Mutual Recognition and Exchange of Driver's Licenses
Co-Chairman of the Ukrainian-Italian Intergovernmental Commission, Minister of Interior Arsen Avakov will hold a corresponding meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Italian Republic Luigi Di Maio in June 2021.
The Agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of the Italian Republic on mutual recognition and exchange of driver's licenses, signed in 2015, was developed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the Government of the Italian Republic on mutual recognition and exchange of driver's licenses, signed in 2015, aimed at simplifying the procedure for the conversion (exchange) of national licenses, primarily for citizens of Ukraine who permanently or temporarily reside in Italy, without retaking theoretical and practical exams and paying fairly high monetary fees.
According to the Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, during the period of validity of the Agreement, 81 driver's licenses were exchanged by Italian citizens residing in Ukraine. About 16400 requests for exchange of national ID cards by citizens of Ukraine in Italy have been received and processed.
In accordance with the established practice of concluding agreements of this nature with other non-EU countries, Italy has limited the duration of the Agreement to 5 years. And in the final provisions of the document there is a clause that provides for “the extension of the term of this Agreement, in order to avoid, even temporary, termination of the exchange of driver's licenses.”
Currently, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Infrastructure of Italy are completing the coordination of the new version of the Agreement, designed to ensure the guarantee of the rights of citizens of both states to the simplified conversion of their national identity cards.
