Investigators of the Kiev police, together with the operational officers of the Department of Counterintelligence Protection of State Interests in the Field of Information Security of the Security Service of Ukraine and under the procedural guidance of the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, detained two persons for selling counterfeit foreign currency. The perpetrators were a 42-year-old native of Luhansk region and a 34-year-old resident of Lviv region.

According to the head of the Investigation Department in the sphere of economic and service activities of the Investigative Department of the Kyiv Police Oleg Kiselev, accomplices have established illegal activities to purchase counterfeit US dollars and euros in other countries with their subsequent sale on the territory of Ukraine:

“We found out that the defendants met the man through the Internet and offered him to exchange foreign currency. The offenders were detained after conducting and documenting control purchases and attempting to sell a batch of counterfeit currency worth $229,000. The withdrawn banknotes are sent for the appropriate examination.”

Detainees were informed of suspicion of committing a criminal offense provided for in Part 2, 3 of Art. 199 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — storage, acquisition, transportation for the purpose of sale, as well as sale of illegally produced counterfeit foreign currency, committed repeatedly, according to a previous conspiracy by a group of persons, in a particularly large amount.

The investigators also petitioned the court to choose a preventive measure in the form of detention. The suspects face up to twelve years in prison with confiscation of property.
