The system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine is ready to respond to the challenges related to the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan
This was announced today, August 26, by the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Mary Akopian during a meeting with representatives of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Commissioner for Human Rights on International Cooperation.
The Deputy Minister noted that over the past week and a half, three evacuation flights from Afghanistan have arrived in Ukraine, organized by the Foreign Ministry under the coordination of the leadership of Ukraine. As of today, 65 Afghan citizens evacuated by Ukrainian planes have applied to the State Migration Service for refugee status in Ukraine.
“The State Migration Service of Ukraine will ensure a thorough consideration of the submitted applications, and the State Border Guard Service, within the specified tasks and powers, will take appropriate measures to control Ukrainian borders,” she said.
According to Mary Akopyan, in Ukraine asylum seekers from Afghanistan have always been among the three most numerous groups of applicants and make up about a third of the total number of refugees.
The Deputy Minister said that the Ministry of Internal Affairs is actively working on strengthening capabilities and mobilizes resources as much as possible, taking into account the projected options for the development of the situation. Mary Akopyan expressed hope for close cooperation with the Office of the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights.
It is worth noting that thousands of people are trying to leave abroad after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan. More than 2 million Afghan refugees are already in neighboring countries, and 3.5 million people are left without a roof over their heads in Afghanistan itself.
Recall that last year, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights signed a Memorandum on ensuring the guarantee of state protection of constitutional rights, freedoms and legitimate interests of citizens of Ukraine and foreigners.
