The law enforcement agencies of Ukraine and the United Kingdom have been successfully cooperating in the field of cybersecurity for several years. Among the successful cases is the conduct of an international police operation jointly with Britain, the United States, Germany, the Netherlands and other countries to stop the spread of the malware EMOTET. The criminal group managed to damage banks and financial institutions in the United States and Europe by 2.5 billion dollars.

However, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine is interested in increasing the number of police operations in the field of cybersecurity.

This was stated today, December 8, by the Deputy Minister of the Interior Mary Akopian during the “Security and Defense” meeting of the Strategic Partnership Dialogue between Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the possibilities of deepening cooperation in the field of international security. In particular, it was about the fight against organized crime and information exchange mechanisms.

They also noted the positive dynamics of interaction with representatives of the British law enforcement agencies in the field of cyber security.

“In bilateral cooperation, it is worth noting the efficiency of the response to cybercrimes thanks to the well-established exchange of information through the channels of the National Contact Points “24/7” and the closed communication channels of Europol “SIENA”. Today, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine is particularly interested in strengthening cooperation with the British side in transferring the experience of the UK in the implementation of the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime,” said Mary Akopian.

During the negotiations, the parties agreed on the signing of the Agreement between the governments of Ukraine and the United Kingdom “On cooperation in the fight against crime”, the draft of which the Ukrainian side proposed at the beginning of the year.

Deputy Minister Mary Akopian said that during the meeting they agreed to involve NGU in the work of the British ORBITAL training mission: “I am grateful to my colleagues from the Ministry of Defence for supporting this idea. I am confident that the strategic dialogue between Ukraine and the UK in the security sphere will make it possible to successfully overcome today's challenges and effectively fight transnational crime.”

Separately, the parties discussed the important issue of visa liberalization between the two countries. In September, British experts praised the level of protection of Ukrainian passports, the procedure for registration, issuance and implementation of the border control procedure.
