72nd anniversary of NATO: directions and achievements of NGU cooperation with the North Atlantic Alliance

April 4 marks the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Ukraine began cooperation with this Organization in 1991. The National Guard joined NATO programs and initiatives in 2014.

On the occasion of the creation of NATO, we will tell you what were the main achievements of the National Guard in cooperation with the North Atlantic Alliance over the past year.

History of cooperation of the National Guard of Ukraine with the Alliance

The National Guard has been cooperating very fruitfully with the NATO Mission in Ukraine since 2014, implementing annual national programs under the auspices of the NATO-Ukraine Commission, which are a key systemic document for the development of cooperation with NATO and an important tool for implementing reforms with the support of the Alliance. In addition, the structure achieves significant results in the implementation of the Partnership Goals within the framework of the NATO Partnership for Peace Program Planning and Evaluation Process, including through the Individual Ukraine-NATO Partnership Program. With the beginning of cooperation with NATO member countries, one of the main tasks for the National Guard is the implementation of international experience and principles and

standards in its activities.

Since 2017, the National Guard Academy has been one of the main platforms for the implementation of NATO training projects in Ukraine.

In June 2018, the North Atlantic Council adopted a new package of Partnership Goals for Ukraine. For NGU, a number of Goals were defined, which it successfully implements both jointly with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and independently. Among the main ones are “Language requirements”, “Planning and preparation for operations”, “Strategic communications”, “Cyber defense”.

The National Guard cooperates fruitfully with the NATO Liaison Office in Ukraine and participates on an ongoing basis in the functioning of the NATO-Ukraine Professional Development Program and the Integrity Education Program.

Directions of cooperation with NATO in 2020

During 2020, international cooperation and reform to NATO standards remained one of the priority areas of activity of the National Guard of Ukraine, despite the restrictions caused by the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thus, during 2020, the servicemen of the National Guard participated in the activities of the Ukraine-NATO Professional Development Program (PDP), the NATO Military Education Improvement Program (DEEP), the Ukraine-NATO Integrity Building Program (BI), NATO trust fund projects, etc.

Ukraine — NATO Programme for Professional Development (PDP):

  • participation in modular training courses on topical issues of state policy of Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine “100 champions”;
  • implementation of a joint project with the National Academy of the National Guard of Ukraine on conducting training courses on Euro-Atlantic integration for the personnel of the National Guard of Ukraine;
  • participation in strategic on-line sessions on the development of the Annual National Program under the auspices of the Ukraine-NATO Commission for 2021 according to the result-based management methodology.

NATO Program for the Advancement of Military Education (DEEP):

  • participation in the 4th multinational working meeting of the sergeant staff “Orientation to the program of professional military education of the sergeant staff, as a tool for the development of the sergeant corps in the 21st century”, Moscow. Belgrade (Republic of Serbia);
  • online meeting for the representatives of the teaching staff of higher military educational institutions of the Ministry of Defense and the National Guard of Ukraine in order to acquaint the representatives of the faculty with the algorithm of the work of the military management bodies of the tactical level of the armed forces of the Allied member states during the decision to conduct combat operations.

Participation in activities within the framework of the Ukraine-NATO Program on building integrity, integrity, transparency and reduction of corruption risks in the work of defense and security institutions, as a result of which the discipline of education of integrity education is included in the training programs of higher education applicants of the National Academy of NGU.

Trust Funds Ukraine — NATO:

  • course “Organization of the search for homemade explosive devices” for servicemen of the National Guard of Ukraine within the framework of the work of the Ukraine-NATO Trust Fund for Countering Homemade Explosive Devices and Defusing Explosive Objects on the basis of the Training Center of the National Guard of Ukraine (military unit 3070, m. Zolochiv).
  • medical rehabilitation assistance of the Office of the NATO Support and Supply Agency in the framework of the work of the Ukraine-NATO Trust Fund for Medical Rehabilitation on the basis of the Military Medical Hospital “Kaleroya” in the city. Hisar (Republic of Bulgaria).

                                 

Also, to provide advisory assistance, Lieutenant-Colonel Olaf Wiedenfeld, an expert in the field of strategic forecasting analysis of NATO strategic forecasting, was constantly involved in the meeting of the working group on the development of the draft Development Strategy (Vision) of the National Guard of Ukraine.

The National Guard of Ukraine constantly participates in international exercises on the territory of Ukraine in order to achieve interoperability with similar formations of NATO member countries. Thus, in 2020, the operational task company of military unit 3017 of the Eastern Operational and Territorial Union of NGU participated in the international exercises “Rapid Trident — 2020".

In February 2021, a photo exhibition of the National Guard was opened at the NATO Information and Documentation Center in Ukraine. This photo exhibition visualizes the modern guard, its activities, reforms and achievements.
