Investigators of Sumy region started 782 criminal proceedings on facts of war crimes
After the de-occupation, law enforcement officers detained 76 Russian servicemen and declared 42 suspects detained for committing war crimes in the Sumy region. To date, the pre-trial investigation of 25 criminal proceedings has been completed, so the materials with the indictments have been sent to the court.
According to the head of the GUNP in Sumy region Sergey Chizh, 782 war crimes committed by Russian troops in the region have been registered to date. However, this figure is not definitive, as investigators from the National Police, the Security Service and the SBI continue to detect and document new episodes.
“We detained 76 Russian servicemen under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine and declared as detainees 42 suspects under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - violation of the laws and customs of war. Among them are the commander of the Kantemirov Panzer Division of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the commandant of the city of Samara for war crimes committed on the territory of Sumy region,” Serhiy Chyzh noted.
Currently, on the territory of Sumy region, investigative actions are being carried out at the sites of shelling and destruction to create an evidence base of Russian crimes on the territory of Ukraine, which will be sent to the International Court of Justice. In particular, additional procedural actions continue on the territory of the Higher Artillery School, which the enemy fired on March 2.
“To date, 25 criminal proceedings for committing war crimes in the territory of the region have been sent to court. Law enforcement officers continue to collect the evidence base on the crimes of the Russian army in the territory of settlements that suffered as a result of the full-scale invasion of the aggressor country,” the Sumy region police chief added.
