The President of Ukraine awarded the commander of border guards Yuriy Yurchyk the title of “Hero of Ukraine” (posthumously)
Yuriy Yurchyk comes from Khmelnytskyi region. He served in the State Border Service of Ukraine for almost 20 years. He died while performing official duties in the Donetsk region.
In December 2022, Colonel Yuriy Yurchyk formed a consolidated detachment of the State Border Service of Ukraine “Soledar”. The unit went to one of the most difficult areas of fighting — the settlement of Soledar.
On January 7, 2023, after clarifying the tasks, in cooperation with the leadership of the 46th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel Yuriy Yurchyk, as the commander of the consolidated detachment of the State Border Guard Service “Soledar”, was given the task to occupy positions in the central part of the city.
From there the enemy was knocked out and it was necessary to occupy their positions, but they were completely destroyed. Colonel Yurchik, in order to preserve personnel, decided to take other positions that were not far from the shattered ones.
At dawn on January 8, 2023, a massive and continuous artillery shelling began for four hours. The invaders tried once again to make a breakthrough. The border guards, along with colleagues from other structures of the Defense Forces, were in positions in shelters.
During the shelling, one of the enemy mines hit one of these shelters of servicemen. At that moment, a group of border guards, which was nearby, led by Colonel Yuri Yurchik, went to the rescue.
Despite the fierce shelling and risking his own life, the colonel evacuated two servicemen from under enemy fire and provided them with first medical aid.
While helping the brothers, another enemy shell exploded near Yuri. Being in extremely serious condition, drained of blood, the colonel did not leave the battlefield. Unfortunately, the injuries received turned out to be extremely severe and incompatible with life...
By decree of the President of Ukraine Yuriy Yurchyk was awarded the title Hero of Ukraine with the award of the Order “Golden Star” (posthumously). The award was received by relatives.
