Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin met with Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Kateryna Pavlichenko and State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Inna Yashchuk. Together they visited wounded Ukrainian defenders in the medical institution of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Kateryna Pavlichenko noted that currently one of the priority areas of work of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is the treatment and rehabilitation of Ukrainian defenders.

“Unfortunately, the number of fighters in need of treatment and rehabilitation is increasing, so we understand that we need to increase our institutional capacity. Therefore, we are currently engaging our partners, including international ones. Thank you for the fact that we have such support and assistance,” said the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

The Prime Ministers of Finland showed the conditions of treatment and rehabilitation of servicemen in the traumatology and neurological departments.

“In patients, in general, the main injuries are mine blast injuries, multiple trauma, shrapnel lesions, bone damage. That is, both the right, left or both lower limbs or upper limbs can be involved in one patient. Very often traumatic brain injury. Such patients are treated by neurologists and neurosurgeons. And then rehabilitologists deal with them,” said Anatoly Smyk, Director of the Department of Health and Rehabilitation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

Since August 2022, Doctors Without Borders has been working on the basis of the main hospital of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which has experience in “hot spots” with wounded servicemen. Sanna Marin also had the opportunity to get acquainted with their work. In addition, a Finnish high-ranking official visited the fighters who returned from Russian captivity.

“Unfortunately, the defenders released from captivity are not in very good condition. It takes time for treatment and rehabilitation, because it is important to restore physical and moral condition. The servicemen have a critical decrease in body weight, as well as injuries that were not treated in the places where they were,” said the head of the hospital Valentin Volokha.

He also noted that visiting international partners adds moral and physical strength for the recovery of Ukrainian defenders.
