Police of Sumy region reported suspicion of a group of so-called “sightseers”

The attackers are suspected of spreading criminal influence and extorting funds from detention center detainees. They could face up to 15 years in prison.

Evidence of the involvement of the defendants in illegal actions was collected by the operatives of the Directorate of Strategic Investigations in the Sumy region and the investigators of the Investigative Department of the Regional Police. As established by law enforcement officers, having a certain “authority” in the criminal circle and being in a detention center, the 44-year-old repeatedly convicted received the status of a so-called “spy” in the institution. Subsequently, he appointed himself two “assistants” - “sightseers” behind the buildings.

The latter, under the supervision of their leader, controlled the processes among the convicts, their observance of “thieving traditions”, criminal schemes, collecting funds for the “commune”, extorting money from the detainees of the detention center. Those who refused to follow the instructions of the “authorities” were subjected to psychological pressure and physical violence.

Operatives and investigators collected the evidence base of the involvement of the defendants in the crimes, which became the basis for notifying them of the suspicion. Three so-called “spies” incriminate the commission of a criminal offense provided for in Part 3 of Article 28, Part 2 of Article 255-1 (dissemination and establishment of criminal influence) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Earlier they were informed of suspicion under Part 4 of Art. 189 (extortion) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

For the crime, the suspect may face up to 15 years in prison.
