Due to the hostilities that Russian troops deployed, the ecosystem of Donetsk region suffered tremendous damage and damage. As a result of artillery shelling, only one third of all plantations were destroyed in the estuary forest last year. The scale of this year's deforestation cannot be estimated, but areas where there are desert instead of trees are well seen by drone operators. “The occupiers are not only killing our people and destroying infrastructure. Because of their crimes, even the condition of the soils is changing. Liman forestry specialists noticed that due to the destruction of more than 6 thousand hectares of forest, the groundwater level began to change. Swamps began to appear in some places, and water levels in some lakes began to rise sharply. The destruction of forests in the Donetsk region will be felt in the future in the neighboring regions. The entire Southeast of Ukraine will be increasingly covered by dust storms from Central Asia,” said Oleksiy Prykhodko, director of Lyman Forestry.
Last year, about 6 and a half thousand hectares of forests were damaged. This makes up about a third of the total area of the state-owned enterprise “Limanskoe Forestry”. This ecosystem is destroyed. Its restoration will take 20-40 years. And, unfortunately, it will not be possible for our generation to restore it. In order for there to be no desert in this place, it is necessary to think now about how these forests will be restored in the future.
