On August 9, at 19:45 rescuers received a message that four people were found in the basement of a two-story residential building in the village of Povitno in Lviv region. Previously, people were poisoned by gases.

Rescuers of the 15th State Fire and Rescue Service of the city were sent to the scene. Gorodok, Department of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection of the Emergency Rescue Department of the Special Purpose Emergency and Rescue Unit of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Lviv Region, the operational group of Lviv district administration, doctors, police officers, gas service and other emergency services.

Arriving at the scene, it turned out that four people entered the basement of the house, where the potatoes were stored. People probably lost consciousness due to inhalation of dangerous gases.

The fire and rescue department in personal respiratory protection equipment was carried out, work was carried out to extract the bodies from the basement, as well as the reconnaissance of the first and second floors of the apartment building and the attic, blocking the gas valve, providing lighting and fencing of the scene.

Such a high concentration of gases could probably have arisen due to the rotting process of potatoes that were in the basement. During the decomposition of organic materials such as potatoes, various chemical reactions occur that can release dangerous gases.

Unfortunately, four people died as a result of the poisoning - a woman born in 1956 and a man born in 1952, 1978 and 1971.

The causes and circumstances of the incident are established by law enforcement officers. In turn, emergency rescuers urge
people to be more careful. In case of poisoning, especially by unknown chemicals, a doctor must be called immediately. But even before his arrival, it is necessary to properly provide the victim with the necessary assistance.

First of all, immediately protect the respiratory system from further action of NHR.

Put a gas mask or cotton-gauze bandage on the victim, pre-moistening it with water or 2% solution of drinking soda in case of chlorine poisoning, and in case of ammonia poisoning - with water or 5% citric acid solution. Take the victim out of the infection zone and provide him with peace and warmth.

Remember! The first medical care for those affected by NHD in the focus of chemical damage is to protect the respiratory system, remove and disinfect resistant NCHR on the skin, mucous membranes of the eyes, on clothing, and immediate evacuation outside the infected area.

In case of ammonia poisoning, remove the victim from the area of infection, rinse the skin, mouth, nose with water. Drip two or three drops of 30% albumin into the eyes, olive oil into the nose.
