The Ministry of Internal Affairs will cooperate with the Norwegian Organization for Humanitarian Demining, - Mary Akopian
This was stated today, May 25, by the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Mary Akopian during a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Norway to Ukraine Erik Svedal and the representative of Norwegian People's Aid, Alberto Serra.
“The issue of humanitarian demining of de-occupied territories is one of the priority areas of activity of the bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. Given the scale of the affected areas, the estimated demining period will be approximately 5-7 years. In connection with this, there is an urgent need to attract international assistance - special pyrotechnic equipment, sending specialist explosives technicians,” said Mary Akopian.
Taking into account the needs of Ukraine in the issue of humanitarian demining, the parties agreed to cooperate with Norwegian People's Aid (NPA), which is opening its representative office in Ukraine.
“NPA is an international organization working in Norway and more than 30 countries around the world whose main objective is to provide post-conflict reconstruction assistance and humanitarian assistance during conflicts. The international activities of the NPA cover three main areas: mine prevention and disarmament, development and humanitarian assistance. In the context of mine prevention activities, the organization specializes, in particular, in the training of rescue dog trainers and training of minesweeping dogs, which have proven their effectiveness during the demining of territories in Iraq, Cambodia, Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said NPA spokesman Alberto Serra.
In addition, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs informed the Norwegian side in detail about the International Coordination Center for Humanitarian Demining, which was established at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine to coordinate the activities of bodies and departments, as well as international and domestic organizations involved in humanitarian demining.
