Migration, security and strengthening cooperation: Oleksii Serhieiev met with the representatives of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic

Today, on June 4, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine hosted a meeting between Oleksii Serhieiev, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, and the Czech delegation headed by Jan Paďourek, the Director General of the Internal Security and Police Education Sector of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic. 

The main issues discussed were migration, combating crime and support for Ukraine in times of war. This meeting was a continuation of the dialogue between the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic, taking after the meeting held on March 01 in the city of Lviv between Ihor Klymenko, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, and Vít Rakušan, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior of the Czech Republic

“The ties and contacts between our countries remain strong and ongoing, and we are extremely grateful for your attention and support of Ukraine in such a challenging time for us. As you know, the fourth part of the Security and Defence Forces of Ukraine is made up of the units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine – the National Police of Ukraine, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, the National Guard of Ukraine. Our combat brigades are bravely repelling the enemy, therefore, the support of the Czech Republic is extremely important for us”, – said Oleksii Serhieiev, the Deputy Minister, addressing the partners. 

In his turn, Jan Paďourek, the Director General of the Internal Security and Police Education Sector of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic, assured that the presence of the Czech delegation at the Ministry testifies to the strong support of Prague and the desire to continue to assist and implement previous agreements: 

“Our presence here is a demonstration of our strong friendship and support for you in all its manifestations. It is also important for us to implement the agreements reached between our agencies in Lviv. We understand that your success on the battlefield is also our security”.

The parties also touched upon the issue of combating crime in both Ukraine and the Czech Republic. In particular, Vitalii Kasap, the Head of the International Police Cooperation Department, spoke in more detail on the results of joint operations between the countries to identify international criminal organisations.

“Our police cooperation has reached a very high level. We can note an increase in the number of our contacts with the framework of the EUROPOL and INTERPOL. It concerns not only the exchange of information but also joint investigations of high-profile criminal cases,” – said Vitalii Kasap.

Oleksii Serhieiev, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, also briefed the partners on the situation with arms trafficking in Ukraine and the work of Ukrainian law enforcement agencies to prevent weapons and ammunition from entering the European Union.

At the end of the meeting, the parties expressed their gratitude for the fruitful dialogue and agreed to continue working on the preliminary agreements.

To recap, on March 01, 2024, Ihor Klymenko, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, met with a Czech delegation led by Vít Rakušan, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior of the Czech Republic, in Lviv.

The meeting resulted in the signing of a joint Declaration of Intent between the two agencies. The document envisages strengthening efforts to ensure further progress towards the implementation of the EU and NATO standards and principles in the activities of the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, sharing experience in the field of hybrid threats and cybersecurity, and assisting in the restoration of infrastructure destroyed by russia’s invasion.
