Yevgeny Yenin: an anti-personnel mine was found in a children's sandbox
The First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine spoke about how the humanitarian demining of the country is taking place and about several of the most common explosive objects used by the Russian army.
Ukrainians should be as vigilant as possible, because the enemy has left a “mining legacy” in the most unexpected places, in particular, on playgrounds and household appliances.
“Such an anti-personnel mine was seized by our explosives yesterday in a children's sandbox. And this is one of the most dangerous anti-personnel mines, which has a fragmentary nature of action, and is designed to impress the enemy's life force,” demonstrated the POM-2 anti-personnel mine. Such a mine when detonated also bounces by a meter for greater damage to the vitality.
“We understand perfectly well that the living force of the enemy, which the Russians consider the Ukrainian army, would hardly pass through the sandbox. And we find such “surprises” quite often: grenades or stretch marks in children's beds, refrigerator, washing machine, near the front door,” Yevgeny Yenin said.
He showed several anti-personnel mines, cluster munitions that the Russian army has been using on the territory of Ukraine since 2014. All demonstrated explosive items are prohibited by the Geneva Conventions, that is, they are treated under international law as mines and munitions that cause extreme suffering to the enemy, so their use is prohibited.
“But for Russia, the rules are not written. Therefore, I emphasize that 98% of the victims as a result of mines of Russian soldiers are civilians, a third of the victims are children,” the First Deputy Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs noted.
According to Yevgeny Yenin, the cost of the projectile does not exceed $5, while the cost of detecting and neutralizing it is from 300 to 1000 dollars. Today, the attention of pyrotechnic units is concentrated on the demining of highways, personal plots, residential premises, life support systems, with the subsequent transition to the demining of agricultural land.
Yenin reminded that every citizen can participate in the demining process using the “Demining of Ukraine” application.
