The meeting of the Ministers of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and Romania took place on October 18, 2024 in Bucharest.

Ihor Klymenko, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, stated that numerous issues were discussed during the negotiations, including the challenges faced by the countries: border protection, illegal migration, countering crime, civil protection of the population and countering illegal arms trafficking.

“Ukraine is in the third year of the full-scale war. We understand that the situation at the front affects both the situation inside the state and the situation on the border, in particular with Romania. This is a common challenge faced by Ukraine and the countries of the European Union,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

Ihor Klymenko informed Cătălin Predoiu, his Romanian counterpart, on the daily shellings of Ukraine, in particular ones targeting the port infrastructure on the border with Romania, and on the successful work of mobile fire teams, comprised, in particular, out of soldiers of the National Guard of Ukraine and the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

Also, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine proposed to consider the resumption of joint patrolling of the river section of the border, which was suspended at the beginning of a full-scale war.

“After the start of a full-scale war, we resumed patrols only along the land part of the border. We propose to explore the possibilities of joint border control, in particular joint patrolling along the Danube River,” said Ihor Klymenko.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the issues of training and exercises, in particular in the field of unmanned aviation. According to Ihor Klymenko, Ukrainian servicemen, rescuers and policemen have gained considerable experience both on the battlefield and in the field of civil protection or rehabilitation.

“I fully support your proposals to strengthen cooperation in the areas of border protection, cooperation within EUROPOL, in particular on the exchange of data on the russian war criminals. We need to apply all available mechanisms to achieve progress in all these areas,” Cătălin Predoiu, the Deputy Prime Minister of Romania, summed up.
