“They do not pay attention to shots and explosions” - Leonid Kotov, the head of the canine center of the Donetsk region police, says about the work of service dogs and the peculiarities of training in the conditions of active hostilities.

Currently, 16 dogs serve in the Donetsk police. They are looking for weapons and explosive devices, drugs and people for their scent trail. Tailed helpers leave for combat missions, the first to enter as part of explosive groups in de-occupied areas for demining. In addition, they are on duty at checkpoints and are engaged in cooperation with the military law and order service.

Dog trainers serve 24 to 7: perform police functions and train pets. Training in the conditions of war has its own specificity - it is the acquisition of combat experience. Four-legged defenders are taught to work without reacting to stimuli such as shots, explosions.

“This is both work during shelling, and work in the setups — when everything around is in fragments. Such preparation helped a lot in the de-occupation of Svyatogorsk and the Estuary,” says Leonid Kotov.

For two years in a row, the service dogs of the Donetsk region police are recognized as the best in the nomination “Search for explosive objects”. The prestigious award from the Kennel Union of Ukraine “Four-legged defenders” was received by the Labrador sisters Kira and Ira, who helped to deport Svyatogorsk and Lyman.

Since the beginning of 2023, service dogs have helped solve 61 crimes. With the participation of tailed “detectives”, the police seized 157 explosive devices, about 10 kg of explosives, 1,500 rounds, 4 units of weapons, as well as — 10 kg of marijuana and more than a kilogram of synthetic drugs. Thanks to dog handlers, the remains of two people were found.
