Police blocked the smuggling channel for the supply of heavy drugs to the countries of the European Union.

Drug trafficking was organized by members of an international organized crime group specializing in the smuggling of heavy drugs. A citizen of Tajikistan ran a drug business. The defendants packed heroin into bags and disguised themselves in the double bottom of boxes of dried fruit. After that, under the guise of products, “goods” were sent with the help of logistics companies from Central Asian countries in transit through the territory of Romania to Ukraine and the EU countries.

It was possible to block the transit channel of heroin thanks to a planned joint special operation of employees of the National Police, the Security Service of Ukraine, prosecutors of the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, as well as law enforcement officers of Romania and Germany.

In July 2022, in order to expose and document the criminal activities of drug syndicate participants, law enforcement officers of Ukraine and Romania conducted a controlled supply of the drug. In early September last year, a shipment of hidden heroin arrived in Ukraine. It was unloaded into one of the warehouses of Odessa. A few weeks later, two foreigners arrived in the warehouse. They were to check the integrity of the packaging of the cargo and the presence of heroin in it and prepare it for subsequent shipment.

Law enforcement officers detained the defendants when they were on the territory of the warehouse. Two 30-year-old Romanian citizens were detained.

During the investigative actions in the warehouse, law enforcement officers found a cargo of powdered substance with a total weight of 186 kilograms. Conducted express tests confirmed that the detected substance is a dangerous drug heroin.

According to preliminary estimates, dealers could receive more than $11 million from its sale.

The defendants were detained in accordance with Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. SBU investigators informed the detainees about the suspicion under Part 3 of Art. 305 (Smuggling of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, their analogues or precursors or adulterated drugs in particularly large quantities) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

And the court chose preventive measures for them in the form of non-alternative detention. For what has been committed, offenders are threatened with up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

In October 2023, Romanian law enforcement agencies detained the organizer of a heroin smuggling channel.
