In total, during this period, the police discovered 130 facts of human trafficking, the vast majority of which are related to involvement in criminal activity.
On October 18, the whole world celebrates the European Day Against Trafficking in Persons, the purpose of which is to raise the level of awareness of the population about such a shameful phenomenon as modern slavery. This day was launched in 2007 by the European Parliament.
“Human trafficking is considered a particularly serious crime in Ukraine and many other countries. Article 149 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine stipulates that crimes related to human trafficking are punishable by imprisonment for a term of 3 to 15 years,” said Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ekaterina Pavlichenko.
According to the information of the National Police, in the first half of 2021, 130 facts of human trafficking were revealed, almost 100 criminal proceedings of this category were referred to the court. The vast majority of cases identified are related to involvement in criminal activity, in second and third place - labor and sexual exploitation of citizens.
Kateryna Pavlichenko explained that human trafficking can take various forms: recruitment, transportation, transfer, sale, use in the porn business, forced prostitution, involvement in criminal activities, violent donation, slavery and situations similar to slavery, coercion labor, involvement in debt bondage, the use of blackmail, threats, violence.
“I ask all those who are caught up in the situation of human trafficking, or those who know about it - do not be silent! I urge you - ask for help. And do not forget that you not only protect yourself, but also help to take measures to prevent such crimes and bring perpetrators to justice,” the deputy minister urged.
