Internal security: Kharkiv police officer exposed for extorting 5 thousand US dollars
One of the police officials of Kharkiv region wanted to receive illegal benefits for closing criminal proceedings. During the transfer of funds, he was detained.
It was established that a resident of Kharkiv region, along with his things, accidentally took the package of his friend, in which there was money. Having discovered the “find”, he immediately contacted the owner of the package to return someone else's. However, the owner had already informed the police about the lack of money, so he offered to talk to law enforcement officers first.
During the conversation, the 32-year-old police official said that criminal proceedings have been initiated in the event of the theft and it is possible to “close the matter” only if he is given $5,000 “ransom”.
Employees of the Kharkiv Department of Internal Security of the National Police and investigators of the TU SBR, located in the city of Poltava, detained the policeman for receiving the second part of the bribe — 3 000 US dollars.
Under the procedural guidance of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office, the defendant was notified of suspicion under Part 3 of Art. 368 (Acceptance of an offer, promise or receipt of an illegal benefit by an official) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. If proven guilty, he could face up to 10 years in prison. Currently, the policeman is detained under the order of Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
