The Ukrainian was detained in Italy four years ago, accused of murdering an Italian photographer and his Russian translator in Slavyansk in 2014. The Supreme Court of Cassation in Rome finally acquitted the National Guard Vitaly Markiv. The highest instance of the country on Thursday, December 9, rejected all the motions of the prosecution and upheld the acquittal of the appellate court for Markiv.

“The end has been put in the Markiv case. All claims were rejected. The decision of the Milan court was upheld,” wrote on Facebook, the lawyer of the National Guard Oles Gorodetsky. All claims against the state of Ukraine were also withdrawn. Recall that Vitaly Markiv was detained in Italy in June 2017 on suspicion of involvement in the death of Italian photojournalist Andrea Rochelli and his translator, Russian Andrei Mironov, in Slavyansk in May 2014.

According to the testimony of the Ukrainian military, Markiv was not involved in the death of Rochelli, since then the unit did not have heavy weapons, namely mortars, from which the photographer could be killed.

In July 2019, the Pavia court sentenced the Ukrainian to 24 years in prison.

In August 2020, the National Police of Ukraine, as part of the criminal investigation into the deaths of Andrea Rocchelli and Andrei Mironov, conducted a number of investigative actions in Slavyansk and on Mount Karachun and received evidence of Markiv’s innocence.

In November 2020, the Milan Court of Appeal acquitted Vitaly Markiv in full.
