Road Safety Week Begins in Ukraine
Ukraine joins the 6th Global Road Safety Week, which will take place worldwide on May 17-23, 2021.
May Road Safety Week kicks off the Second Decade of Road Safety Action 2021-2030, approved by UN General Assembly Resolution 74/299 at its 74th session last August, with the ambitious goal of reducing deaths and injuries due to road accidents by 50% by 2030. The world community has launched a series of measures aimed at improving the situation regarding road accidents. The 6th Global Road Safety Week will be dedicated to the topic of Managing Speeding, one of the main causes of accidents and will take place under the slogan #StreetsForLife #Love30, that is, it will focus on speed limits traffic of vehicles up to 30 km/h within residential and pedestrian zones in cities.
Road traffic injuries, according to WHO, are one of the world's biggest health problems. More than a thousand people are injured or maimed every day. The risk of dying from an accident varies from country to country, but 70% is in low- and middle-income countries.
Mortality rates in our country are 3-4 times higher than in European countries. Every year, according to various statistics, Ukraine loses more than 3 thousand of its citizens in accidents, more than 30 thousand are injured. In 2020, there were: 168,107 accidents on Ukrainian roads, of which: 26,140 accidents - with victims; 3,541 people - died (1198 - pedestrians); 31,974 people - were injured (pedestrians - 6959). Also in 2020, there were 4,432 accidents involving children, of which 168 children died and 3,957 were injured. In the first quarter of 2021, according to official police data, there were 42,689 accidents in Ukraine, which is 18% more than in January-March 2020. The main causes of accidents with dead and injured: exceeding the safe and established speed of movement; violation of the rules of maneuvering; violation of the rules of passage of intersections; violation of the rules of passage of pedestrian crossings; failure to observe the distance.
