Ukraine and Italy develop cooperation in space industry

Design Bureau “Pivdenne”, VO “Pivdenny Machine-Building Plant named after. Makarova and the Italian company “AVIO S.p.A” have agreed on the additional supply of 10 engines of Ukrainian production for the Vega launcher worth almost 6 million euros.

The Chairman of the Ukrainian part of the Ukrainian-Italian Council on Economic, Industrial and Financial Cooperation, Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic Luka agreed on this during the IX session of the Ukrainian-Italian Council for Economic, Industrial and Financial Cooperation Gigi Di Maio.

The result of the parties' agreements was the Memorandum on cooperation in the field of space activities concluded between the State Space Agency of Ukraine (DKAU) and the Italian Space Agency.

Reference: Project VEGA (ital. Vettore Europeo di Generazione Avanzata) has been developed by the Italian Space Agency since the early 1990s, to replace the US-made Scout carrier rocket. In November 2000, VEGA entered the Arian carrier rocket program. The
State Design Bureau “Southern” got the right to supply its own rocket engines for the European carrier rocket “Vega” in 2004.

Ukrainian engine launched today, April 29 at 04:50 Kyiv time. The
main load of the rocket was the Pléiades Neo 3 spacecraft weighing about 750 kg. Airbus Defence and Space ordered its delivery into orbit. The Vega light carrier rocket has a Ukrainian engine, in particular
the RD-843 Marching Engine Unit (BMD), which is used as part of the 4th stage liquid propulsion plant.
