Participation in peacekeeping operations: The National Police of Ukraine provides support to the Haitian police in the fight against organized crime
At the behest of the UN Secretary General, a UN working group consisting of three international experts headed by Police Lieutenant Colonel Ruslan Bilous was in the city. Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Haitian gangs daily carry out custom-made murders, kidnappings for ransom, smuggling of weapons and drugs, and other serious crimes, occupying a significant place in international transnational crime.
In view of the urgent need for decisive action, in November 2020, after successful selection among a large number of candidates from UN member countries, Police Lieutenant Colonel Ruslan Bilous was selected and approved by the UN Secretariat as part of the Police Department of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations of the United Nations in the city of New York as an officer of the department for the fight against organized crime.
Upon arrival at the site of the task, the group of experts held more than 50 coordination meetings with the Haitian National Police, the ambassadors of Canada and France, employees of the Ministry of Justice of Haiti, representatives of international organizations and national institutions.
After a detailed study of the operational situation in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, the group of experts made a brief visit to the south of the country, where they held an important meeting with the leadership of the regional police unit of the city of Lei Kaes to establish the level of interaction between the police on the ground and the central apparatus of the Haitian National Police.
The head of Haiti's national police thanked the UN police experts for their support and expressed hope for further cooperation.
In turn, the leadership of the UN Secretariat noted the high training and professional approach to the work of experts in the Republic of Haiti and thanked for maintaining the high image of the UN. Ruslan Bilous was awarded the UN Medal “At the Service of Peace”.
