Members of the OZH will be tried in Zaporizhzhia for the murder of the professor of the National University
In the course of operational-investigative actions carried out as part of the pre-trial investigation of criminal proceedings, the police collected evidence on the basis of which four members of the group were notified of suspicion of committing serious crimes as part of the organized crime group. The indictment is sent to court.
A report on the disappearance of a 42-year-old doctor of sciences, professor of the department of Zaporizhzhya National University was received by the police on November 11, 2020. During the processing of his wife's statement, employees of the Criminal Investigation Department established that on the afternoon of November 10, he left the university building and got into a Toyota car.
Information about the incident was entered into the Unified Register of Pretrial Investigations and an investigation of criminal proceedings was initiated on the basis of Part 1 of Art. 115 (Premeditated murder) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
As Ruslan Nevozhai, deputy head of the GUNP in Zaporizhzhya region, said: “At the beginning of March, criminal investigation officers received information about the involvement of a 27-year-old local resident who used a Toyota car in the abduction of the victim. It was later found that he had a number of traffic license plates in his own use to cover up his criminal activities. The man confessed to involvement in the disappearance of the wanted teacher, his subsequent premeditated murder and indicated the place where the victim's body was hidden.”
Therefore, police investigators opened two more criminal proceedings on the grounds of Part 2 and Part 3 of Art. 146 (Illegal Imprisonment or Abduction of a Person) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
In the course of further investigative actions, law enforcement officers conducted authorized searches of the places of residence and whereabouts of the 27-year-old defendant. As a result, a large amount of ammunition was seized in two garages owned by him. Among them are two jet anti-tank grenades, about 60 rounds of ammunition for subbarrel grenade launchers, as well as metal multi-caliber casings and 3 grenades, which are marked as training grenades.
A “set” of license plates for the car was also revealed.
At the place of residence of the attacker, the police seized more than 300 different caliber rounds, six rifles of various types and other items related to weapons and ammunition.
At the same time, the criminal investigation officers exposed three more people involved in the commission of a criminal offense: 1975, 1991 and 1993 years of birth. One of them is a foreigner, the second is a law enforcement officer, the third is a local resident previously convicted of selfish crimes.
The pre-trial investigation established that the organizer of the crime, a native of Tunisia, born in 1975, had developed a detailed plan to kidnap the victim, and the roles were distributed among the group members regarding the murder of the professor and the subsequent concealment of the body of the deceased.
In preparing and directly committing the crime, the perpetrators adhered to a strict conspiracy.
At present, the defendants who, according to a preliminary conspiracy, committed a robbery attack followed by the deliberate murder of a university teacher for selfish motives, in agreement with the Zaporizhzhya Regional Prosecutor's Office, have been informed of suspicion of committing a criminal offense as part of organized crime of the group. The most severe sanction under these articles provides for imprisonment for a term of ten to fifteen years or life imprisonment, with confiscation of property. Two of them were given preventive measures in the form of detention, the other two in the form of round-the-clock house arrest.
On September 28, 2021, the investigator of the investigative department, in agreement with the Zaporizhzhya Regional Prosecutor's Office, issued an indictment on criminal proceedings under Part 4 of Art. 187 (Robbery aimed at seizing property in large or especially large sizes or committed by an organized group, or combined with causing grievous bodily harm) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine is directed to the district court of the city of Zaporizhzhia.
