Digital filters for COVID certificates “SafeBorder” appeared at checkpoints on the state border
The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine has begun to apply electronic verification of COVID certificates confirming vaccination of citizens, negative test result or recovery from illness.
This was made possible thanks to the joint work of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Digital Transformation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Border Guard Service to implement the decisions of the Government of Ukraine. Eventually, border guards received electronic devices with “SafeBorder” software. It provides for the possibility of automated verification of the validity of the document and its belonging to the relevant person when crossing the border of Ukraine. Each COVID certificate has a unique electronic ID and QR code.
To check the border guard, it is enough to scan the QR code of the certificate provided by citizens and receive confirmation of the status of the document on the screen of the electronic device.
To date, almost 40 countries are connected to the trust network of digital COVID certificates, including EU member countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, as well as non-EU countries: Ukraine, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, Vatican, South Macedonia, Turkey.
Since the beginning of the application of the software, border guards have already checked more than 60 thousand digital COVID certificates during registration of citizens to enter Ukraine. Most of all, citizens use them when crossing the border at checkpoints on the western part of the border and at the capital's airports.
It is worth noting that the software is constantly updated depending on the expansion of the list of countries or improvements to improve the operation of the system. The experience gained between software developers and border guards will become the next step for Ukraine and other countries on the path of the fight against the pandemic.
Verification of COVID certificates issued in countries that are not connected to this network is carried out visually and with the help of technical means of border control with the study of signs for possible fakes.
