The Ministry of Internal Affairs honored the memory of the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl tragedy
Today, December 14, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine honored the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
The day of commemoration of participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was established by the Decree of the President of Ukraine 14 years ago. It is dedicated to the end date of the construction of the sarcophagus over the destroyed fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. On this day in 1986, the construction of the “Shelter” facility was completed, which gave specialists time to develop further important high-tech solutions.
“More than 35 years ago, there was a tragedy that became the biggest in the 20th century for the whole world and especially for Ukraine. She taught us unity, to appreciate those people who are closest to the source of danger, who are the first to respond to any emergency situations. 33 thousand rescuers, militiamen, units of internal forces responded to the tragedy, with their lives and health they saved not only the Ukrainian nation, but the whole world from extremely serious consequences,” said Minister of Internal Affairs Denis Monastyrsky.
He noticed that every second liquidator became disabled, and every tenth, unfortunately, is no longer with us.
The Chairman of the Chernobyl Association of Bodies and Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Vasyl Durdinets stressed that this disaster will never be a thing of the past for liquidators.
“All officers, servicemen of the internal forces, medical workers in an extremely difficult situation acted professionally and responsibly, without regret of his life and health. They honourably fulfilled their official and civic duty,” said Vasily Durdinets.
The majestic feat was accomplished by all those who participated in the elimination of the consequences of the explosion at the fourth block of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. But first of all, firefighter heroes stopped the spread of the nuclear disaster, prevented it from turning into a global extermination tornado for the whole of Ukraine and other countries of Europe.
