Those who have no right to make a mistake: The Engineer Guards celebrate a professional holiday
November 3 — professional holiday of the engineering units of the National Guard of Ukraine. The engineer guards-engineers of the Eastern Territorial Administration play an important role in ensuring mine safety for NGU servicemen and civilians in the area of the operation of the Joint Forces.
Since 2019, guards as part of the combined demining groups of the Eastern Operational and Territorial Association have been clearing the area of explosive objects using all possible means of search. At the risk of their lives, military sappers carry out demining and engineering reconnaissance of the area, defuse a huge number of explosive objects, clearing thousands of hectares of territory. So, in October 2021, a combined group of dog handlers and sappers of the Slavic Regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine found a dangerous shell of three grenades and six UZRGM incendiaries to them. The grenades were removed from the conning tower and destroyed in a special quarry. Behind the shoulders of professional sappers, more than one life has been saved, both military and civilian in Donbas.
“For 8 years of the ATO, we have studied the peculiarities of mining territories. Particularly dangerous now remain the areas of land on which active hostilities were carried out. Many areas in the East need humanitarian demining, and this is a laborious process that requires the sapper to have iron endurance and a cool mind, because the sapper inspects every 2 centimeters of the earth,” says Major Yevhen Mekshun, head of the engineering service of the Slavic regiment of NGU. units of the National Guard of Ukraine, performing tasks in the area of the Joint Forces, carry out improvement of defensive fortifications at checkpoints and places of service of platoon support guard groups.
After all, the security of the guards remains unchanged and a key priority.
Guard sappers are also engaged in educational work and conduct classes for the military in the combat training system, telling about the threats that may arise during service both on the line of defense and during the protection of public order in cities.
“A military engineer is a person who is constantly developing and studying many sciences, following the novelties of weapons. A good sapper is one that has not lost the feeling of self-preservation. Fear mobilizes a person's attention and concentration and protects him from unjustified risks. The sapper is wrong twice. The first is when he chooses a profession, the second is when he makes a careless step that can cost his life,” says Yevhen Mekshun.
