The fire at the oil base in the village of Hlevakha, Kyiv region, which occurred on June 8, 2015, is forever inscribed in the history of the fire and rescue service of Ukraine, as the largest not only in our country, but also in Europe. It was she who divided the lives of many people into “before” and “after” and for the sixth year has been responding with painful memories in the hearts of every caring Ukrainian.

In total, 939 rescuers and 117 units of equipment fought the blaze, and more than two hundred people and more than half a hundred units of equipment worked at the same time around the clock.

Thanks to the selfless actions of the firefighters in the first 12 hours, it was possible to prevent the spread of fire outside the territory of the oil base, in particular to the nearby KLO oil base, a military base where ammunition was stored, and in general, to reduce the scale of the emergency by a dozen times.

It took 90 hours to extinguish the fire, and it was localized within the perimeter on June 9. However, until June 20, from time to time, fuel burning resumed in various places. So, it was only on June 20 that the fire was finally eliminated.

For all the time of the elimination of the fire, the most tragic day was the morning of June 9, when an explosion occurred on the territory of the oil base. In an instant, he took the lives of three rescuers: Maxim Glazkov — deputy chief of ARZ SP of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Kiev region, Lieutenant Colonel of the Civil Protection Service, Anton Basovskyi — firefighter-rescuer of the 15th State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the city. Kyiv, a sergeant of the civil protection service and Andriy Tarasenko — deputy chief of ARZ SP of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the city. Kyiv, Major of the Civil Protection Service.

They were professionals in their field, heroes who fulfilled their official and civic duty and gave the most valuable — their lives in the fight against the fire element. Maxim Glazkov, Anton Basovsky and Andriy Tarasenko were posthumously awarded the Order “For Courage” III degree, and the memory of them will live forever in our hearts, because no matter how many years pass — the boys will always remain part of our rescue community.
