Police and authorities should join forces to protect children and victims of domestic violence — Igor Klymenko
In 2020, police found 14,659 missing children, the vast majority of whom left home due to misunderstandings with their families. In total, police units registered almost 209,000 reports of conflicts in families. 3,400 such appeals came from children. The Head of the National Police of Ukraine announced this today, January 29, during an extended meeting on the results of the department's work in 2020.
Igor Klymenko noted that issues of child protection and effective response to domestic violence are the focus of police.
“In 2020, the police found almost all the missing children, and this is 14,659. At the same time, we recorded almost 3,400 crimes committed against children. More than 2,200 were revealed and sent to trial. At the same time, children committed almost 4,400 crimes. In view of these figures, I initiated changes in the work of juvenile prevention units — the so-called “child” police. We carefully select specialists and develop special programs to prevent crimes against both children and children.”
The head of the department did not ignore the issue of effective response to the facts of domestic violence and the proper protection of victims in such cases. At the same time, he noted that 45 specialized mobile groups are actively working in all regions of the state, which travel to report conflicts in families:
“Last year, the police received almost 209,000 reports of domestic violence, that is, 570 such reports every day. This is 47 percent more than in 2019. I note that the increase in referrals is a constant trend that has persisted for more than one year. A broad information campaign, legislative changes, and increased enforcement are the reasons why domestic violence has ceased to be a “one-family problem.” According to statistics, the most women contacted the police with reports of domestic violence - more than 182 thousand. And we received 3,400 such appeals from children.”
After analyzing all the information, the police launched 13 criminal proceedings every day and compiled 363 administrative protocols on the facts of domestic violence. Last year, police issued more than 42,000 urgent prohibition orders. Police control 82,000 offenders.
“This year we planned to expand the project to 42 more cities and additionally create 50 specialized mobile groups,” said Igor Klymenko and stressed that the police and authorities should join forces to protect children and victims of domestic violence.
