Kyiv Police Detained Serial Car Hijacker
A 51-year-old resident of the village of Glevaha stole Chevrolet Aveo cars on the territory of Buchansky district during 2020 and 2021.
The criminal activity of the man was exposed by the operatives of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Kiev region police together with the employees of the Buchansky district police department with the involvement of special agents.
Law enforcement officers conducted a number of operational-search activities and established the location of one of the vehicles. As it turned out, the attacker drove the car to the city of Novovolynsk in the Volyn region and left it on the territory of a private household. During the inspection of this car, the police found that the driver's door locks and ignition have external signs of hacking, the VIN number was changed artistically, and duplicate plates are completely absent. The certificate of registration of the car had obvious signs of forgery.
At the place of residence of the man and in his car, law enforcement officers conducted sanctioned searches and seized state license plates from stolen cars and “cover” numbers, special equipment for searching GPS - beacons and for silencing GPS signals, a set of tools for breaking locks and others. It was established that the man was repeatedly convicted of committing similar crimes.
At the moment, investigators following the procedural guidance of the prosecutor's office have informed the attacker about the suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 289 (Illegal possession of a vehicle) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for imprisonment for a term of five to eight years with or without confiscation of property.
Currently, the police are checking the involvement of the defendant in the commission of similar crimes on the territory of Kyiv and other regions.
