In order for the law enforcement officer to close the criminal proceedings and return the withdrawn funds, the defendant offered him more than 30 thousand US dollars. Now he faces up to eight years in prison with confiscation of property.

In September last year, the senior investigator of the Pechersk police department initiated criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Art. 209-1 (Intentional violation of the requirements of the legislation on preventing and countering the legalization (laundering) of income received by criminal means) and part 2 of Art. 364-1 (Abuse of powers by an official of a legal entity of private law, regardless of the organizational and legal form) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine in relation to two persons who organized an illegal scheme of non-bank currency transfers. The accomplices carried out monetary transactions through a private institution in order to hide the source of the funds.

During the pre-trial investigation, law enforcement officers searched the premises of the defendants and seized personal belongings, mobile phones and more than $84,000 as material evidence in the case.

The head of the Kiev police Andriy Kryshchenko said that the investigator invited one of the offenders to the district police department to conduct the necessary investigative action, during which the 45-year-old Odessa resident decided to “close the case”:

“The man offered the police more than $6,000 to close the criminal case. In addition, in case of return of the money seized during the searches, the attacker promised the investigator part of it, namely $25,000. Under the procedural guidance of the Pechersk District Prosecutor's Office, the prompt support of the employees of the Security Service of Ukraine, as well as the police departments of internal security, the police officers documented the fact of providing illegal benefits”.

Investigators of the territorial police department informed the defendant about the suspicion of committing the crime provided for in Part 3 of Art. 369 (Offer, promise or provision of unlawful benefits to an official) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Soon the court will choose a preventive measure for him. The offender faces a sentence of up to eight years with or without confiscation of property. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
