Illegal sand mining worth over UAH 342 million — National Police investigators refer case to court against organized group

Among the accused are the director of the company, his deputy and the markshader. The defendants are involved in the illegal extraction of 407 thousand m3 of minerals on the territory of Kyiv region. As a result of illegal actions, the ecosystem of the Kiev region caused serious consequences - the collapse and erosion of the banks of the Desna River and a significant change of the coastline.

Investigators of the Main Investigation Department of the National Police and the operatives of the Strategic Investigations Department in the Kiev region of the National Police established that the director of the enterprise, his deputy and the markshader established criminal activities. From 2019 to March 2021, sand extraction was carried out outside the limits established by the permitting documentation. Therefore, the defendants illegally mined the mineral - 407 thousand m3 of sand and caused the state more than 342 million UAH of losses.

In addition, due to the extraction of sand, severe consequences have been caused to the ecosystem - the coastline of the Desna River has changed, pits have formed in the pit, and the collapse and erosion of the banks have occurred.

In order to compensate for damage to the property of intruders, the special equipment that was the instrument of committing the crime and the accounts of the enterprise were seized.

In agreement with the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office, the indictment against the members of the organized group was sent to court. They are incriminated by Part 3 of Art. 28 Part 3 of Art. 239-2 (Illegal possession of water fund lands in particularly large sizes) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The accused may face up to five years in prison, with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a term of up to three years.
