National police have detained a man on suspicion of kidnapping a person and seizing $2.5 million worth of cryptocurrency. USA
One of the members of the criminal group was detained by the operatives of the Department of Strategic Investigations at the airport “Boryspil” as soon as he returned from abroad, where he was hiding from the authorities of the pre-trial investigation.
The event happened in April 2021 in Kyiv. Then two unknown people forcibly dragged the man into the car. As a result of the operational measures, the employees of the Department of Strategic Investigations and the Main Investigation Department of the National Police identified the persons involved in this crime. As it turned out, residents of the Poltava region, in order to seize the cryptocurrency of the victim, who is engaged in the exchange of electronic funds, decided to steal it. At first, they took him to one of the villages of the Kiev region and kept him in a rented house.
Threatened with physical assault, the defendants gained access to the victim's electronic wallets and seized $2.5 million worth of cryptocurrency. THE UNITED STATES. Later, the man was taken to the Poltava region, where he was left in the forest, taking away his belongings and money.
Due to the concealment of intruders from the authorities of pre-trial investigation, they were declared wanted. In addition, in order to prevent the attackers from carrying out any transactions with the victim's electronic money, the investigators blocked the accounts to which the wanted persons had access.
Also, the police managed to return part of the funds illegally received by the defendants.
On October 25, operatives of the Department of Strategic Investigations of the National Police, together with employees of the State Border Service of Ukraine, detained one of the members of the criminal group at the airport “Boryspil” immediately after his arrival in Ukraine. Measures to establish the whereabouts of his accomplice continue.
The detainee is charged with committing crimes provided for in several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- Part 2 of Art. 146 (unlawful imprisonment or kidnapping of a person);
- Part 2 of Art. 189 (extortion);
- Part 4 of Art. 186 (robbery) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Yesterday, October 26, the suspect was given a precautionary measure by the court - detention without any alternatives.
For the offense, he may face punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to 10 years.
