MAGNUS: Operation “UNIFIER” has developed a glossary of military abbreviations and terms for the Ukrainian military
The Main Directorate of the NGU announced the release of a mobile application - a glossary for the military, which contains the vast majority of terms and abbreviations used by NATO member countries both during tasks and in everyday activities. MAGNUS mobile application developed by the Joint Operational and Tactical Group of the Armed Forces Canadian Forces (Operation “UNIFIER”) and will be available for use by the Ukrainian military by the end of this year.
It will be free to download for both users of the Android and IOS system operation.
“Application name “MAGNUS” is an acronym that stands for — NATO Military Abbreviations and Glossary for NATO Support to Ukraine. The idea to create a glossary arose at the beginning of our joint activity, now we are happy to implement it,” says the head of the linguistic support department of the operation “UNIFIER”, representative of the Danish Armed Forces Captain Espen Madsen. According to him, the purpose of developing the application is to improve the level of communication between Ukrainians by and foreign military structures, and assistance to linguists during training activities by foreign training missions.
Currently, the application already has 4000 terms, they were worked out by professional linguists from the operation “UNIFIER”.
The head of the Department of International Cooperation Colonel Volodymyr Hrabchak noted the importance of creating this kind of dictionary, which will greatly facilitate communication with foreign partners, and also noted that his use of the glossary will be useful for interdepartmental interaction.
Thus, the Ukrainian side proposed the creation of a working group, which will include representatives of foreign training missions and components of the security sector of Ukraine. The main goal of joint efforts should be to approve the terminology contained in the dictionary for their further application in the educational process.
