Today, August 9, during a special operation, the operatives of the Strategic Investigation Department in the Odessa region of the National Police, together with law enforcement colleagues, seized more than 60 kg of cocaine that arrived in a container with bananas from the Republic of Ecuador. The attackers planned to transfer a batch of drugs to the countries of the European Union.
During the activities to expose criminal groups involved in the organization of international drug trafficking, law enforcement officers received information about illegal importation of a batch of cocaine to the Odessa port. Following measures, the police, together with the operatives of the Regional Directorate of the SBU and the Southern Regional Department of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, established that three persons — citizens of Ukraine, Albania and Romania — were involved in the smuggling. The “goods” arrived at the port of “Southern” from the Republic of Ecuador in one of the containers with bananas.
According to the results of the special operation, law enforcement officers detained three people during an attempt to remove a batch of drugs from the port. The issue of notifying defendants of suspicion under Part 3 of Art. 305 (smuggling of narcotic drugs) and Article 307 (illegal production, manufacture, acquisition, storage, transportation, shipment or sale of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances or their analogues) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and the selection of preventive measures for them is resolved. Pre-trial investigation in criminal proceedings is carried out by the investigative departments of the SBU in the Odessa region under the procedural leadership of the Odessa Regional Prosecutor's Office.
The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment up to 12 years.
