DPSU dog trainers will use GPS to train service dogs
The border guards of the Kennel Training Center received modern sets of GARMIN Alpha 100 GPS-navigators with an advanced T5 service dog tracking system.
The transfer of navigators took place within the framework of the international technical assistance project “Support of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine in preventing and combating illegal trafficking of weapons, ammunition and explosives”, with the assistance of the OSCE. The sets of GPS navigators were handed over to the border guards by the national specialist of the Project Vadim Makogon.
From now on, with these modern devices, dog handlers will be able to track and train search dogs at a distance, measure speed and direction of movement, distance to the animal, and adjust the actions of assistants in preparation for detective work.
“The device allows you to track up to 20 dogs at a distance of up to 14 km at a time,” says Alexander Revutsky, a specialist of the Kennel Training Center. He also talked about other benefits that a GPS collar provides for training service dogs. In particular, this equipment makes it possible to remotely control or encourage the dog with vibration and sound signals, and thanks to the light indicator, the dog handler can track his four-legged assistant at night.
With the assistance of the OSCE, training was also held for teachers of the Kennel Training Center and the National Academy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. How to use the devices “GARMIN Alpha 100/T5" in practice in the work of dog handlers was told and shown by the instructor — representative of the Kingdom of Denmark Vigger Knudsen Nikolai. In particular, the participants of the training got acquainted with the principle of operation of the T5 collar and the Alpha 100 device and the procedure for its application during the search of an area of terrain in order to identify a person's belongings and chase a person by his scent trail.
