Cyberpolice of Dnipropetrovsk region exposed attackers in the appropriation of foreigners' money through phishing
The defendants created a dozen phishing online ad sites where users entered their banking details. Thus, the attackers searched the victims for more than a million hryvnias.
The criminal scheme was exposed by the employees of the Cyber Crime Control Department in the Dnipropetrovsk region together with the investigative department of the Dnipro district police department.
Three 19-year-old locals created about ten phishing sites that completely copied the design of foreign online ad sites.
Users, citizens of European and American countries, entered their bank details on fake resources for payment. In the future, the attackers “tied the collected card data to the contactless payment system on the phones.
From the accounts of the victims, the defendants paid for purchases in household appliances stores.
At the moment, the police are establishing a circle of deceived people. The previous amount of losses reaches more than one million hryvnias.
In the homes of the defendants, law enforcement officers conducted searches and seized mobile phones, computer equipment and bank cards. The removed is intended for expert research.
Criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Art. 200 (Illegal actions with transfer documents, payment cards and other means of access to bank accounts) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The issue of announcing suspicion and choosing a preventive measure for intruders is resolved. Investigative actions continue. Procedural management is carried out by the Central
District Prosecutor's Office of the city of Dnipro.
Cyberpolice reminds citizens of the dangers of phishing resources and recommends:
- do not follow suspicious hyperlinks sent by third parties; - for online shopping use only verified resources;
- carefully check the URL of the required site, because one extra character may mean that you have come to a phishing site;
- do not tell anyone the card data, passwords and other data that can be used to confirm payments;
- in the case of a purchase on an ad platform, discuss the details of the transaction only in the chat of this platform and do not go to instant messengers.
