This was recalled today, May 29, by the Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov.

Seven years ago in Slavyansk, the godfather of the first volunteer battalion of the National Guard, died in Slavyansk in a helicopter with 11 militiamen and guards. The first Hero of Ukraine in this war, a combat officer. We remember,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs.

Recall that on May 29, 2014, after taking off from Mount Karachun, Russian fighters of the Girkin detachment shot down a helicopter, in which 12 of our defense soldiers died along with General Sergey Kulchytsky. One of the crew members, navigator Alexander Makeenko miraculously survived.

Serhiy Kulchytskyi was one of those who created a volunteer movement in NGU. In particular, the first reserve battalion, from which the formation of all volunteer guard units began. After the death of Kulchitsky, he began to bear his name.

Helicopter pilot Alexander Makeenko, who was the only one who managed to survive, recalls that Sergey Kulchytsky always flew to his subordinates to support the morale of the fighters and personally receive information.

“It was May 29, 2014, we fulfilled the task as intended - delivery of products, water and rotation of personnel. We drew up the route of the flight, flew to Mount Karachun, carried out a rotation of personnel there, carried out a flight to the fifth checkpoint, and after takeoff there was an explosion, the helicopter lost control and a disaster occurred, in which 12 of our servicemen died. It is with sadness that I express my condolences to the relatives of the dead. They fulfilled their military and civic duty,” Alexander Makeenko said.
